NC Collaborative Law Basic Training 14.00 MCLE Hours

The collaborative law process is a streamlined conflict resolution option that saves time and money without destroying important relationships. It avoids litigation and instead involves a series of round-table meetings between the parties and their collaboratively trained lawyers. During these meetings, the parties discuss the problem and its resolution.

There are no court filings, depositions, or hearings, which helps the parties maintain privacy. Resolution moves at a pace that matches the needs of the parties, typically in a matter of weeks and at a fraction of the cost of traditional litigation.

In this two-part program, attendees receive a total of 14 hours of collaborative law training.

Part 1: Watch a series of On-Demand videos where you are provided with collaborative practice tools and resources. These videos are recommended as a pre-requisite to the in-person session. It will not be possible to participate effectively during the in-person session without having viewed the On-Demand videos.

Part 2: Join us at Wake Forest School of Law in Winston-Salem on Thursday, June 4, to practice the basics of collaborative law by participating in a role play exercise. There will be role play exercises designed specifically for civil law practitioners (including practices areas such as employment law, fiduciary and estates law, construction law, business disputes and corporate law, etc.) and specifically for family-law practitioners (including equitable distribution, custody, alimony, etc.) Each breakout group has a trained collaborative lawyer as a facilitator. There will be an introduction and preparation for each breakout session followed by a group debrief on what has been learned and what questions arose.

Recurring events:

Global Collaborative Law Council (GCLC) has a recurring open BOD meeting each month that members may attend. See the GCLC page to join and contact information to receive an invitation.

General Information:

NCCCLA requires 14 hours of basic collaborative law training to qualify for membership. The two primary opportunities for basic training from year to year will likely be a NCCCLA conference planned for May or June, and a Global Collaborative Law Council (“GCLC”) conference planned for later in the summer of each year.

The NCCCLA event will generally consist of approximately 8 hours of self-paced online training using recorded presentations, followed by approximately 6 hours of in-person practical skills training, with networking opportunities for all collaborative practitioners.

NCCCLA also will offer from time to time advanced training opportunities for its members, and provide notice of advanced training made available by our fellow collaborative organizations.

Information about upcoming events when scheduled will be posted on this page. If you’d like to be notified by email, please use our contact form on this website to contact us and be put on a notice list.

GCLC training will generally be available by live or virtual attendance. The live conferences have previously been scheduled in Florida, North Carolina, Texas, and Washington. Details will generally become available in the spring prior to the conference. For further information, visit www.globalcollaborativelaw.com/news-events
